Get Ready for Your Best Year Yet
According to one study, only 8% of people actually achieve their New Year goals*. Pretty abysmal right? But the good news is that with focus and advanced planning, 2016 can be the Year of You. The year where you leave behind all the bad and put the wheels in motion to be your best yet.
Here are seven resolutions that can make your new year the best (and healthiest) ever.
1. Get SMART! Integrate or upgrade your fitness.
The first thing you need to do is set your goal; but what you should really do if you want to be successful is create a SMART goal. I like to follow the principal of having your goals be: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Timely (aka SMART).
These can also be thought of as micro-goals. If your plan is to lose weight, don’t say I want to lose 45 pounds by the end of the year as your focus won’t be there and you will get depressed when you don’t immediately hit that target. You want shorter range goals that you can attain easily and celebrate like I want to lose an inch off my waist in 4 weeks and plan out how you are going to get there.
Another great way to approach your goals is by planning to take specific actions like “3 spin classes per week for 2 months” or “5 days of hitting the gym per week for 3 months”.
If you achieve your goal, you should give yourself a treat like a weekend getaway or a massage. Planning to celebrate gives you the incentive to keep on moving when you want to quit and write it down and share it with your partner, friend as it’ll set a psychological trigger encouraging you to kill it. Take the time right now and write down your goal.

2. Start Up a Brand New Fitness Journal
I know what you’re thinking, it can be a drag to keep a journal but time and time again, I’ve found this highly effective not only for myself but with many many clients I have trained. The thing is that the key to holistic fitness for your body is really setting up the right mindset, and tracking your fitness and clean eating plan in a journal sets you up for some major success.
Journaling allows you a way to set goals for yourself, plans for how you will achieve those goals and then reward yourself for them. Express your feelings in the process. If you’re becoming depressed or discouraged about your progress, the journal gives you a chance to vent; if you’re feeling happy, then you can express gratitude for the results you are making.
If you’ve never found a good journal to jot down your fitness goals, then I highly recommend this inexpensive Fitlosophy Fitbook, it is a pretty sexy way to help you succeed with your resolutions this year.
3. Have Fun With What You Eat
This year, you’re going to forget all the pre-conceived notions of healthy eating not being fun and tasty. The first thing you’re going to do is try at least one new healthy meal each week. To start spend a little time reading about “superfoods” and then create your weekly shopping list of foods you want to integrate. To make it easier for you I’ve written about this a lot in articles like: 7 Superfoods You Can Mix Into Any Dish and Top Superfoods for Looking Good, Feeling Great, and Losing Weight.
Once you have your list, I find the best time to get the groceries is on Sunday so I can come back and prepare them for the week. A bonus is that by getting into the kitchen and cooking your own food, you will help yourself cover a second powerful new year’s resolution – saving money. In addition, with just one night out for dinner you will more than cover this awesome ebook I’ve created for you that includes recipes to help define your abs – Sexy Flat Abs Meal Plan.
Lastly, if you’re tempted to make poor food choices like binging on that pint of Ben and Jerry’s that has been calling out to you, then come up with an alternative behavior you’ll perform instead. This can be having a healthy snack on standby as an alternative or it can just be to get out of the house for a walk around the block (you’ll be surprised how powerful this one is!).
4. See the White Lab Coat
Start off the year with an annual exam with your doctor to get a full health screening. Be sure to ask your doctor about the diet and exercise regime you’re considering and see if he or she has any concerns that you should be aware of.
For an added fun bonus (not really!), ask your doctor to do a full blood analysis for all the goodies like cholesterol, sex hormones (estrogen/testosterone), thyroid, and blood sugars as these may all have an impact on your body fat composition. Put it in your calendar right now to make the appointment.
5. Add More Good Stuff
This is the year you’re going to reduce/eliminate bad habits such as smoking and drinking too much and adding more fun active stuff. If you are a habitual drinker or smoker, talk to your doctor during your annual exam about ways to cut that shit out. There are programs including support groups that can help as well as medications that can slowly wean you off your habit.
Bad habits aside, let’s set some goals to get you outside enjoying what your city has to offer. From sunset walks to hiking to biking to camping, plan at least one of these each month for the next 12 months and you’ll have a lot of great memories to look back on.
6. Schedule in Personal Time
A lot of fulfilling New Year’s Resolutions seems to involve work and determination. However, it doesn’t all have to be blood, sweat and tears! Create some “me time” to relax and help unwind in a healthy way.
Meditation and yoga are two amazing ways to keep you limber and agile both physically and mentally for many years to come. If you haven’t tried them already, you might be surprised by how damn good you feel after sticking to a session or two each week for a few weeks.
If that doesn’t sound like your cup of tea, a new trending stress-melter are adult coloring books. Yes, you heard that right, there new coloring books include everything from animal designs and geometric patterns to Harry Potter, Dr. Who, and even Game of Thrones! Pick up a pack of colored pencils and begin coloring inside the lines, it’s kind of addicting, in a good way that is!
7. Get Organized
Last, but certainly not least, is a way to improve your health and also take care of a major area for many people: organization. You’re heard this before, but if you declutter your surroundings, you’ll find you’re less stressed and anxious. The idea that we have a lot of “stuff” to clean can fill us with anxiety and an urgency that we should be doing more around the house. If you spend time going room to room cleaning up & throwing out unnecessary items, you’ll feel relieved in a big way.
Finally, organize your time better, especially with when you can get your fitness routine in, that will help kill excuses that you don’t have time as your valuable time will instead revolve around a smarter and healthier you!
For 2016, the best thing you can do is make it the “Year of You.” If you follow these seven steps as guidelines, then you’ll find that when 2017 gets here you will be a completely different (and much happier) person. Now leave a comment below on what some of your immediate resolutions are, I promise it’ll get you on a pretty awesome path!
