Hi Cheryl, well the protein shake before the workout is ok but you're right it won't be effective in supplying him much energy. He can add fruit to it like a banana to get the added benefit but it may still take a little too long to digest. He should definitely try the banana or other fruit before the workout and then the protein shake after to see how the difference which I believe would be much more beneficial.

I have a 17 year old son who wakes up with a whey protein shake and then starts his workout. Based on your information, he isn't waiting long enough for the shake to be effective. Correct? So, if he wants to workout before school (and wants to sleep as long as possible :-) then what do you advise? A banana or other fruit as a pre-workout and then a protein shake with is regular breakfast? Thanks.

Hi Dee, should take them about 30 minutes before you workout and if you have it with some fruit like grapes it will be absorbed better.

Hi Corey, yes apple slices and natural peanut butter is pretty good, but since peanut butter has high fat content it would be a good idea to have it at the minimum of 1hr before working out so your body can digest it.

It depends on the workout though Corey. If you are wanting to go really intense cardio for instance then a high glycemic food before your workout is not the worst idea because it will provide you with lots of quick expendable energy.

I definitely would not eat corn flakes and raisins before a work out. It would spike your blood sugar since they're such high glycemic foods.

I've always believed that you shouldn't work out on an empty stomach. But you should also try not work out on a full stomach. This is a quick ticket to getting sick and ruining your workout.

My fave has always been half a banana with some natural PB, but lately I've started making the effort to put together a super smoothie and it's led to some absolutely ROCKING workouts! I've been making my own nut milk (you can buy it if you can't be bothered), and blending with half a banana, some raw organic honey, and a little bee pollen and maca just to really rev things up. Oh - plus the most important part! Raw cacao powder. Yum yum.
