Hi Hope, glucosamine is more for the joint and doesn't affect the muscle. Sounds like you need to focus more on warming up properly and working on flexibility training after your workouts. I would recommend speaking with a physical therapist about this to make sure you don't have long term problems as they will be able to look at your conditioning.

I started taking glucosamine & chondrioitin supplement for knees pain three months back on the advice of my ortho. & was feeling much better. Now for the 15 days I am getting muscle pull on the back of knee causing severe pain. This has happened three times & the most recent one is taking very long to heal though I am taking the supplement very regularly. I am really concerned as the winter is approching.

Hi Cheryl, this is a very good question. My research indicates that the sulfate is required to help make and repair the cartilage. My best advice would bt to check with your physician for other possible solutions and to make sure that is right for you.

I suffer from severe Sulfa allergies and am unable to take any medications or supplements with sulfa or sulfates included. I also have very bad knees. I'm 37 and have already had 3 surgeries on my rigth knee. I have degerating arthritis and will eventually have to under go a complete joint replacement. I've tried the phsycial therapy, hydrotherapy, and the rooster comb injections all with no success. I would love to take Chondroiton and Glucosomine supplements as everything I have read on the topic leads me to believe this would be something that could offer me a lot of relief - maybe even give me a chance to run again. What concerns me is that everytime I see either of these products (packaged alone or together) they are listed on the bottle as Glucosamin Sulfate and Chondrotine Sulfate.
So, is there any alternative to someone who has a sulfur allergy?

Excellent Leon, thanks for your observation on this. It's sad to see that many of the studies on MEDLINE are also getting influenced from product manufacturers. Hopefully some more long term government studies can be done to verify or disprove the findings.

Check out McAlindon et al. JAMA. 200; 283(11): 1469-75. Great meta-analysis of the two together. Turns out most of the 'positive' studies were conducted by the product manufacturers. The literature is also dominated by manufacturer/shareholder endorsed studies (86% of the ones meeting inclusion criteria). I'd have to read each study to decide for myself, but I agree that they are most likely safe with likely small benefits for supplementation.
