Hi Dee, there is a bit of controversy over doing exercise first thing without breakfast, in my humble opinion I do believe this is wrong. I've found that with something as simple as a banana and a glass of skim milk, or a whey protein smoothie at least 30mins before working out allows you to have a much more intense training session and also not feel faint and dizzy. Hope that helps!

Hi Sam,

I've just discovered your site and I'm really enjoying reading all of the helfpul information you've put here. I have a personal trainer at the moment and I have been on a ketogenic diet and doing weights in the afternoon for 7 weeks now. After 4 weeks we also added a light morning cardio routine to my plan, which we have just upped to 1 hour. And my personal trainer says I need to do the cardio first thing in the morning, before I have my first meal. I am not convinced he's right about this, and you seem to think it's more important to have breakfast first.. is that right? Can you please shed some light on this for me?
Thank you!

Dee

It all makes sense now!

I've always been a breakfast eater so that's no problem for me but recently I've started a much more intense workout routine than I've done in years and my muscles feel tired the next day but never the same "it kills me to walk up and down stairs" kind of way.

The other thing I've added to my breakfast/daily routine. WATER!

Thanks for giving me the epiphany!

Well, I don't drink soda....so I have no correction to make there.
However, I could make a point of drinking more water in the morning........which I'm going to try really hard to do.

I have been exercising in the morning before work for 2 years. I want to lose these last 10 nagging pounds. SO although I haven't bought the green tea yet. I never thought of drinking 8-16 oz of water upon wking. SO this is day to of this new challenge. I do feel better drinking the water. I am like sam I do eat beofre working out because I get light headed ( I work out pretty hard), bt some things don't set well, any suggestions.

Within 30mins to 60 mins after you get up from bed. Your body is basically fasting for 8 hours while you sleep so it's best to feed it as soon as possible after you wake.

For years I've been curious about the timing of 'breakfast'. During the week with work I eat within the first hour of waking up, however on the weekends and / or holidays I do not tend to eat until I've been up for several hours, although I still call it breakfast.

My question, What is the most beneficial time frame for eating the first meal of the day??

Thanks!

Grave yard shift really does take a toll on your body...but as long as you sleep and wake at the same time everyday your body can adapt a little. Keep trying your best and hopefully you can get work normal hours sometime soon...but yes all these tips will work regardless of the time.

Hi Sal, try having lots of tea instead. You can get so many varieties including non caffeinated teas so you don't get dehydrated from caffeine content.

Betty, how long before bed are you eating something? Perhaps try not eating before bed a little longer. You should be quite hungry when you wake up in the morning.

Coffee isn't the worse thing in the morning as long as you make sure you are very well hydrated with water afterwards. Have you tried having a small protein shake? Whey protein is made to be easy on the stomach, but it will take at least a couple weeks for your body to adapt. If you can give it a go instead of coffee and see how you feel.

I get up at 5 am and head to the gym but before going into class a friend and myself always have a medium coffee (since we are always first in the parking lot). During my workout I drink water but how much depends on the workout - the more intense the more I drink. I then head home for a shower and have a healthy breakfast. I am always hungry by the time I get home but when I get up to go to the gym I have no desire to eat. I have tried to have something light such as a banana or glass of juice but it just doesn't sit right during my workout. Any comments or suggestions on the coffee first thing in the am? I am not much of a tea drinker but would like to incorporate a bit more green tea into my day but it does not appeal to me first thing in the am.

I am always hungry by the time I get home but when I get up to go to the gym I have no desire to eat. I have tried to have something light such as a banana or glass of juice but it just doesn’t sit right during my workout. Any comments or suggestions on the coffee first thing in the am? I am not much of a tea drinker but would like to incorporate a bit more green tea into my day but it does not appeal to me first thing in the am.
