Glutamine Supplementation

Glutamine Supplementation
Along with Whey Protein Powder, and Creatine, Glutamine is another supplement which is highly recommended for anyone wanting to increase their lean muscle mass (and hence get rid of their fat).
What is Glutamine?
Well Glutamine (specifically known as L-Glutamine) is non-essential amino acid and an important part of muscle development and function. By non-essential, that means that our bodies can create Glutamine without obtaining it directly from our diet. But there is a catch! The catch is that this amino acid is non-essential unless we are injured, ill or under substantial physical stress, and in this case it is important for us to supplement with Glutamine via our diet.

Effects of Caffeine – To Have or Have Not!
I wanted to take a real look at caffeine and really explain and understand its effects on our bodies. Obviously we find caffeine in highest concentrations within coffee, tea, soft drinks and especially energy drinks.
So how does caffeine work? It acts as a stimulant to our nervous system which provides enhanced physical and mental alertness. It also creates a temporary but increased use of fatty acids & blood sugars for muscle fuel.
The effects of caffeine can vary greatly depending on age, sex, liver function, medications and of course pregnancy. In general for healthy adults, the effect can last anywhere from 3-4 hours, but one study has found that women who are taking oral contraceptives can feel the effects as long as 5-10 hours (reference)!
It’s interesting to note that caffeine is somewhat considered as a performance enhancer in the Olympics. Read more…

Benefits of Garlic
While studying human nutrition and biochemistry one of the most researched and talked about super-foods was garlic. Historically, it has a very interesting background in the medical field being used for centuries. So, I thought it would be good to revisit and talk about the benefits of garlic and garlic supplementation.
Garlic and Cancer Prevention
Numerous population based studies have suggested that regular consumption of garlic may reduce the risk of several types of cancer including colorectal and stomach cancers. The American National Cancer Institute is currently conducting heavy research on cancer and it’s possible ability to block cancer causing agents.
One notable mention is that of garlic being able to reduce the carcinogenic (cancer producing) chemicals of meat cooked at high temperatures. Read more…

Migraine Headaches & Insomnia – Magnesium Deficiency Video Health Tip 4
Today I’d like to talk to you about the mineral magnesium. Although Magnesium is the ninth most abundant element in the universe and an essential element for all living organic material, what caught my attention was stumbling across a report that mentioned many people today have a deficiency of magnesium in their diets.
What’s most interesting about this is that many migraine patients have been found to have lowered levels of magnesium in their blood during a migraine attack.
Patients with insomnia, muscle twitches, and heart conditions have also been found to have lowered levels of Magnesium!
So what’s the research show when it comes to supplementation with Magenesium? Well, clinical studies of magnesium supplementation have shown to reduce the frequency of migraine headaches, a fascinating link! Read more…

Health & Wellness Series Part II
I hope you enjoyed Part 1 in the Wellness Series where I talked about really finding the cause of overeating to prevent becoming unhappy with your physical appearance.
In Part 2 I want to talk about planning. Planning to include YOU in your schedule.
So what do I mean about Planning to include YOU in your schedule? Well think about it this way. On a typical day you schedule out your day on what are the most important things you want to accomplish.
You usually have at least 3 or 4 things that take a lot of your time and energy. The rest is spent with emails, small talk on the phone or with friends, browsing the web, watching tv. Read more…

Every once in a while I come across some media content that really holds a ton of value. In this case, I’d have to say it had to do with the queen of talk shows, Oprah Winfrey. Stay with me here even if you’re a macho guy who thinks that the content she talks about is just for women, in this case it is definitely not.
So you know why it’s not? Because Oprah is using her defeat with the weight loss war as an example to show us the psychology of why she can conquer almost anything she touches, but not the most important thing in her life…her own health!
